People moving to the area often start the same way. They open a home search site, save a few listings, look at photos, compare square footage, ask questions in Facebook groups, and try to narrow things down that way.
My recommendation? Take a step back first. The first decision is not the house. It is how you want life to look once you get here. Heck – you’re moving to the Gulf Coast of Florida – the land of sunshine, water, and, oh, yes, golf courses galore.
Do you want to be near the water? Close to golf? Looking for lots of amenities and activities? Prefer mature trees and an established neighborhood?
Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, and the surrounding areas all offer something different. The challenge is usually not finding homes. It is finding the area that fits how you want to live.
Some people know immediately. They want boating, beaches, fishing, marinas, sunsets, and easy access to the water. Others picture golf communities, amenities, social activities, walking trails, and an active lifestyle.
Then there are buyers who may not be sure what they want. They may simply want space, larger lots, mature landscaping, or something quieter.
There is really something for everyone. Knowing this can narrow the search quickly.
Bradenton has a large seasonal population – “snowbirds.” Many owners spend part of the year here and head home when the season ends. Their priorities often look different. For part-time residents, beach access, golf, maintenance-free living, airport access, amenities, and lock-and-leave convenience usually move up the list.
Full-time residents tend to focus more on commute times, schools, storage, home office space, and everyday convenience. It is also about the neighborhood and what they want out of it - pool, activities, fitness, and other amenities.
Neither approach is right or wrong. It is just a different way of living.
If seasonal living is on your radar, I also have another article coming about snowbirds living in Bradenton and some of the things that make it unique.
When I first start talking with potential buyers, I ask a lot of questions to understand their lives. Some of the questions I ask include:
These answers tell me a lot more than what square footage and the number of bedrooms they want. After all, even if you love a house, you can still end up in the wrong place.
Most people start with the house, but I like to start with how you want to live. From there, the neighborhoods often become much clearer, and we can move onto finding the home.
I focus on Bradenton real estate, helping buyers and sellers navigate the local market with confidence. I also work with clients in nearby areas like Palmetto, Parrish, and Sarasota -when that’s where the right fit is.
