Bird Key sits right in Sarasota Bay between downtown and St. Armands Circle. It’s exclusively single-family homes, with some spectacular waterfront properties and views that can stretch across the bay to downtown Sarasota
Bird Key is polished and private, but the homes have much more variety than you might expect. The island was substantially developed beginning around 1960, and today you’ll find everything from original-era homes and extensive renovations to dramatic contemporary estates and new construction.
There really isn’t one Bird Key look. Homes date back to the island’s early development years, while others have been completely reimagined or replaced. Home prices start above $1 million and climb quickly from there, particularly for waterfront properties.
Many homes front Sarasota Bay or the island’s canals, making boating a major part of the lifestyle. Bird Key Yacht Club has been part of the island since its development and offers boating, dining, tennis, fitness and social activities to its members.
This may be Bird Key’s biggest advantage. Cross the Ringling Bridge one way and you’re in downtown Sarasota; head the other way and you’re at St. Armands Circle and Lido Key. Bird Key Park sits right at the causeway with kayaking, fishing and walking. The Ringling Bridge itself is one of my favorite Sarasota walks—the views from up there are hard to beat. I used to run a 4-mile race from the VanWezel to Bird Key Park and back. It was such a fun race.
Bird Key is undeniably high-end, but what I like is that it isn’t a neighborhood of matching multimillion-dollar homes. The architecture, age and style can change dramatically from one property to the next.
And then there’s the water. Whether it’s a canal behind the house, a private dock or a wide-open view across Sarasota Bay, Bird Key has some of the most unbelievable views in Sarasota.
